Privacy Principles for Identity in the Digital Age

CDT has been working to develop consensus-based, technology-neutral principles to guide policymakers and companies as they develop and implement identity and authentication services for governmental and commercial purposes.

PASS ID

The PASS ID Act mitigates or corrects critical privacy and security flaws introduced by REAL ID while still establishing minimum federal standards for the issuance of driver’s licenses and ID cards. CDT supports the reforms proposed by PASS ID as a much-needed improvement over current law.

REAL ID

The REAL ID Act requires the federal government to set standards for state driver's licenses. Draft regulations issued to implement the law lack privacy and security protections. CDT has concluded that the REAL ID Act is fundamentally flawed and needs to be repealed or substantially rewritten.

Passport Card

The Passport Card is a proposed State Department document for use by US citizens in travel to Canada and Mexico. As proposed, it would use an insecure form of RFID technology.
